Pete:Put yourself in the shoes of a family with a bulky, gas-wasting SUV looking at $75 and $80 fill-ups, Pam. They bought that porker because it places so much metal between their children and the wackos on Interstate 35. Now they're looking at the Mazda5 with mileage in the mid-20s. Do they bite the bullet and stick with the guzzler? Or buy the Mazda and trust that its six air bags will replace sheer bulk as a safety factor?

Pam:Are you kidding? I'd take the minivan, hands down. I figure I'm just as likely to die of sticker shock at the gas station as I am getting crushed inside my car. Besides, I can console my worries with the thought of fewer of those behemoths on the road.

Latest Release: Geneva Motor Show: Full specs of the Mazda2

We already showed what the new Mazda2 looks like a couple of days ago and got confirmation that it will form the basis of the new sub-compact Ford that's coming to the US soon. Now we have all the details on the new little Mazda and it should be a fun little car. With a curb weight of only 2,100lbs and 103 hp from a 1.5L engine it should have some decent zoom-zoom to go with it's looks. The 1.3L version has a preliminary rating of 43.6 mpg combined.

Well, to be honest, not much of a leak this time as only a couple of days remain before the all-new Mazda2 aka Mazda Demio in Japan, debuts at the 77th Geneva Motor Show. Unlike the current model whose conservative looks (unsuccessfully) balance between a semi-mini-mpv and a compact hatch, the new Mazda2 / Demio takes on a modern, you could even say a sporty approach to the mini-segment. That’s even more obvious in the versions fitted with the “Sports Appearance Package”.
